Sri lanka has a colorful history about gem industry.because of this gems Sri Lanka also known as Rathanadeepa (the island of gem) Sri Lanka is home to 75+ varieties of gems out of varieties available in the whole world.

The most common varieties found in Sri Lanka are Blue Sapphires, Star Sapphires, Rubies, Star Rubies, Yellow Sapphires, Pink Sapphires, Padmadradcha, Orange Sapphires, White sapphires, Moon stones and emeralds.   


As one of the world's steadiest suppliers of top-quality sapphires and seventy-five other types of gemstones, Sri Lanka is one of the most important countries in the world when it comes to gem and jewellery, despite its small size.

Hailed as the mythical Tarshish, the legendary island of invaluable gemstones, Sri Lanka has been the source of many celebrated gemstones throughout history. According to Hebrew records Queen Sheba's great ruby and the star ruby in King Solomon's ring has been sourced from Tarshish, nearly 30 centuries back.

Sri Lanka has long celebrated as the main source for large blue sapphires and star corundum, that are above the size of 100 carats. Incidentally, 60% of the largest gemstones including sapphires had been sourced from this small island in the Indian Ocean.

Fruits and Vegetables Around eighty different varieties of fruits and vegetables are grown in Sri Lanka’s varied agro-climatic areas. Nuwara Eliya in August, is a much more peaceful destination than Nuwara Eliya in April, where the festivities taking place in that little town make it more of a carnival than a salubrious holiday destination. My grievance with Nuwara Eliya is that it is woefully lacking in places of adventure and interest. Piduruthalagala, once a heaven for nature trails being out of bounds due to security reasons, it seems that only Horton Planes remain for the adventurer. Determined to find more places of interest and exhilaration, one sunny morning we decided to take a trip to the Shantipura colony some 1,692 metres above sea level. The settlement was established by Mr. T. William Fernando, former member of parliament representing Nuwara Eliya in the 1960s. In 1980 Mr. R.
